Initial thoughts on the Apple iPhone

  1. Gimme, gimme, gimmee…. 😉
  2.

  3. It runs OS X. Can third party widgets be installed? What about other software?
  4.

  5. It runs Safari. Does this mean I can use the native Gmail interface in all its Ajaxian glory?
  6.

  7. Will Microsoft create iWord, iExcel and iPowerpoint? Probably not. Does that mean that Apple will port mobile versions of Pages and Keynote, then maybe add a Spreadsheet application? Please?
  8.

  9. Would I switch to Cingular from Verizon for this phone? Yes. And no. If I weren’t already in a two-year contract with Verizon, I’d switch. But I’m not about to pay a contract termination fee (nor for the full price of my Treo 700p) for this phone. Plus, I can almost guarantee that there will be a CDMA version of this phone. It’s just a matter of time.
  10.

  11. Only EDGE? I was surprised it wasn’t HSDPA. However after some additional thought, that will probably be just fine when it’s combined with WiFi. There are so many open access points around these days that you may not even notice it. Dunno. We’ll wait for the reviews to come in.
  12.

  13. I’m assuming it uses iSync to sync with a Mac. Will it sync with Entourage, like my Palm? What about Windoze users? Will they create a Windoze version of iSync?
  14.

  15. Will the Mail application work with Exchange, like VersaMail on the Palm? (I highly doubt it. So far, they’ve only mentioned IMAP and POP3.) I hope it will otherwise, it’ll be a no-go for me. Or I’ll have to carry two devices. 😉
  16.

  17. Will the mobile version of iTunes allow me to update and download my podcasts? (This would be HUGE!)
  18.

  19. They’d better improve the battery life on this puppy. Quick. Five hours just isn’t going to suffice.
  20.

  21. Gimme, gimme, gimmee…. 😉

UPDATE: Ryan Block at Engadget confirms some of my concerns: No iTunes wireless purchases or podcast updates; no Exchange or Office Support; no third party app installation at this time.
