Really sorry to hear what you all are going through and I hope you get your power back soon. Up here in New Hampshire we were also hit hard by the storm and our major utility, PSNH, has been tweeting out updates via @psnh and also interacting with customers. They, though, have created two pages along the lines of what you are looking for:

Town-by-town listing of # of customers with and without power

Town-by-town list of "estimated time of recovery"

Obviously this doesn't help you out, but I thought I'd pass along that at least some utilities out there are trying to do a bit better with getting this kind of info out.

You're absolutely right - in this era of instant access to information it is NOT crazy for customers to want info like this from their utilities.

Best wishes,
Dan

jf comments on Try Pre-Paid Mobile Broadband for Occasional 3G Data Usage

The MiFi is a mobile hot spot - it "just works" - with the proper setup.

If the tech support folks have helped you set it up properly, you should just select it from the Airport menu, enter the password and you're done.

Make sure that it's NOT plugged into USB when you do this. I tried the USB stick first only to find out there were no 64-bit drivers. Virgin tech support told me the MiFi worked just fine, so I returned the USB MC760 and got a MiFi. Guess what? It didn't work and although I had told this different tech about five times I was using Lion, he informs me that "the MiFi is not compatible with 10.7." I asked why and he said "because it won't work." I asked why specifically it won't work. He said "Because it isn't compatible" and said to take it back and get a refund.

So, what did you do to make it work?

jf comments on QR Codes Provide Quick and Easy Access to Facebook Likes On-The-Go

Hi, Paul.

Thanks.

Lately I've been using Kerem Erkin's QR code generator (http://keremerkan.net/qr-code-and-2d-code-generator).
